Trustee’s Statutory Duties

Trustees serve as legislators for the township, setting policy and providing overall direction. Their statutory responsibilities include:

  • Setting township policy and direction as elected legislators
  • Ensuring mandated governmental functions are properly funded and provided
  • Adopting and amending ordinances and ensuring their enforcement
  • Budgeting and oversight of optional programs and services, township property and facilities, compliance with mandated financial laws, audits, and internal policies — including hiring, firing, and creating job descriptions
  • Maintaining fiduciary health of the township by ensuring sufficient finances, managing risk responsibly, and preventing waste
  • Determining staffing needs and ensuring compliance with applicable employment laws
  • Attending board meetings and voting on all township issues
