Township Organized
1861The township of Lincoln was organized March 20, 1861, and the first election was held at the house of Eben Wright. Charles Inman was named the first supervisor, alongside Orville Hosmer and Eben Wright as Judges of Election.
Naming Inspiration
1861Lincoln Township may have been named because Abraham Lincoln had just been inaugurated President of the United States two weeks earlier on March 4, 1861.
Township Disorganized
1877Lincoln Township was disorganized by an act of the Legislature and attached to Hope Township in 1877.
Township Re-established
1878In October of 1878, Lincoln Township was re-erected as a township after being disorganized the year before.
First Election After Re-organization
1879The first election after re-organization was held on the first Monday in April, 1879, at the residence of L. F. Smith. Inspectors of Election were Frank S. Stratton, Harrison Averill, and L. F. Smith.
Farming and Economy
Historical accounts describe Lincoln Township as having some of the finest farms. The soil was especially adapted to wheat, oats, and potatoes. Clover grew abundantly, supporting cattle, horses, and sheep. Wool was an important commodity with large flocks of sheep grazing in meadows.
