Role Overview
Under MCL 211.10d, the annual assessment of property must be performed by an assessor certified as qualified by the State Tax Commission (STC). Certification is granted upon successful completion of STC-approved training or examination, ensuring the assessor is fully prepared to perform the duties of the office.
When signing the assessment roll, the assessor certifies not only the accuracy of the roll itself but also that they have personally prepared and supervised the work in accordance with STC laws and guidelines. To maintain compliance, the State Tax Commission conducts an assessment roll audit in each local assessing unit every five years to evaluate adherence to the General Property Tax Act (GPTA).
Responsibilities
The Assessor is an employee of the township responsible for the overall direction and management of the township’s property appraisal program. Duties include:
- Identifying, inventorying, and determining market values for all township properties
- Calculating assessed valuations in compliance with State Tax Commission regulations, methods, and procedures
- Ensuring fair and equitable property assessments across the township
- Maintaining accurate records of Homestead exemptions and property transfers in compliance with State law
- Overseeing the preparation and certification of the annual assessment roll
